The Darktown Print Workshop

Enter Darktown, where tattoed sailors are aplenty & McVouty's 2nd Hand Emporium has vintage gems for all tastes. Your print workshop with me, in this imaginary hinternlands (relocated to the outskirts of Bognor for two days), is designed to get you to think about print in a fresh, new, anarchic way. The perfect print will not exist, but many mistakes, & overlapping of layers will create new works that will surprise and amaze.

We'll be screenprinting, but adding other hands on techniques and processes into the mix that will guarantee inky fingers by the end of it.

The outcome is yet to be decided (in Darktown hours, next year is a long, long way off), but you'll spend the two days experimenting, and rejoicing in the devil-may-care approach, executed with gusto & verve. Think Dada, think Paris '68, think Poly Styrene... think Darktown!

About the tutor:

Jonny Hannah is an illustrator & printmaker.
He studied Illustration at The Cowdenbeath College of Knowledge, Liverpool Art School & The Royal College of Art. Since 1998, he has been a freelance Illustrator, working for a huge variety of clients, including Royal Mail stamps, Penguin Books, Domino Records & The St. Kilda Courier.
He collaborated with the celebrated animator Jonathan Hodgson on a short film for Channel 4 TV, called ‘The Man with the Beautiful Eyes’, which went on to win numerous awards, including the animation BAFTA in 2000.
In his few spare moments, he can often be found in the Cakes & Ale Press HQ, a shed in his Shirley garden. There, he paints, makes books, designs poster & generally makes a mess. His various exhibitions over the years & years have included ‘Main Street’ at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2015, & ‘Northumberland Folk’ - four (that’s right, four) exhibitions across museums in the North-East, including Woodhorn Museum, just as we crept out of out lockdowns in 2021.
He is represented by the Heart Agency in London & New York, & is currently working on a new commission exploring & celebrating the fair town of Hartlepool, where he is conscious that dressing like a French sailor, as he often does, may cause problems…

All of our workshops take place in our studio at 22 Arun Business Park, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis, PO22 9SX.
